Your amiibo Can Visit More Games Than It Can Save

Understanding read and write compatibility helps you avoid overwriting a favorite figure’s game data.

Nintendo distinguishes games that read an amiibo from games that write data to it. A figure can hold save data for one compatible read/write game at a time, while still working with compatible games that only read it. Using the same figure elsewhere does not always require clearing its saved progress. (Nintendo amiibo data support)
Check the game’s interaction first
Before changing anything, find out whether the new game simply scans the figure for a reward or needs its own stored data. Those are different actions, and the figure’s character alone does not tell you which one a game uses.
If a game asks to replace existing data, stop long enough to identify what is already saved. A familiar figure may contain training or customization you would prefer to keep.
Organize for playing as well as displaying
A short note beside your collection can track which figures have game data attached. You do not need an elaborate database: a character name and the relevant game are enough to avoid confusion months later. Keep the official compatibility information handy when trying another title. An amiibo collection works best when its display role and its in-game role support each other, with deliberate decisions about the progress stored inside each figure.
