GTA 6 Skips PC at Launch Again, and History Says Wait
GAME MODE Staff·Jun 20, 2026· 4m read
GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S only, with no PC version at release, and Rockstar's history suggests PC players face a wait of a year or more.

Console first, again
PC players hoping to play GTA 6 at launch will be disappointed. Rockstar has confirmed the game will release November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S only, with no PC version at launch. It is a repeat of a pattern the studio has followed for years, and one that reliably frustrates a large and vocal audience.
The good news for PC gamers is that Rockstar's track record all but guarantees a port will come. The question is not whether, but when.
What history tells us
Rockstar's recent releases offer a clear roadmap for the wait PC players can expect:
- GTA IV's PC port arrived roughly 8 months after the console version.
- GTA V's PC release came about 18 months later.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 reached PC around 13 months after its console debut.
- Analysts project a GTA 6 PC release in late 2027, possibly the fourth quarter, roughly 12 to 18 months after launch.
That late-2027 estimate is analyst speculation, not an official Rockstar date, so it should be treated as an informed guess rather than a promise.
Why Rockstar waits
The console-first approach is deliberate and tied to several factors. Hardware sales deals with console makers, piracy mitigation, and the extra time needed to optimize a game of GTA 6's scope for the endlessly variable PC ecosystem all play a role. A staggered release also lets Rockstar deliver a more polished PC version that can take advantage of high-end hardware, rather than shipping a rushed simultaneous port.
There is also the storefront question. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on the Epic Games Store and Rockstar's own launcher before reaching Steam, while GTA V went straight to Steam. GTA 6's PC storefront situation is unconfirmed, adding another variable for PC players to watch.
For now, the practical reality is that anyone wanting GTA 6 on day one needs a current-generation console. PC players face a familiar wait, likely rewarded with a better-optimized version that supports higher resolutions and frame rates. It is cold comfort in the near term, but Rockstar's history strongly suggests the PC edition, whenever it lands, will be worth the patience.
