Crimson Desert Review: A Gorgeous, Uneven Epic

GAME MODE Staff· Jun 27, 2026 4m read

Pearl Abyss delivers a stunning open world and thrilling combat, held back by a thin story and some rough edges, in a debut that still swings for greatness.

An ambitious swing

After years of anticipation, Pearl Abyss finally unleashed Crimson Desert, and it is every bit as ambitious as promised. Released March 19, 2026, on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and macOS, it sold 5 million copies in its first month on the strength of a breathtaking open world and combat that few games can match. It is a genuine spectacle, even if it does not stick every landing.

The game follows mercenary Kliff Macduff across a sprawling fantasy continent, and the sheer scale and beauty of that world is the first thing that grabs you.

Combat that soars, a story that stumbles

Crimson Desert's combat is its crown jewel. Fluid, weighty, and dramatic, its boss encounters in particular feel like set pieces from a blockbuster film, blending melee, ranged, and environmental options into a system that rewards mastery. Exploring the open world, with its dynamic weather and hand-crafted vistas, is consistently rewarding.

Where the game wavers is in its storytelling and moment-to-moment polish. The narrative lacks the depth to match its grand presentation, and control responsiveness can feel imprecise, occasionally undercutting the otherwise superb combat. These are the rough edges of an enormously ambitious project, and Pearl Abyss is already patching and expanding the game with free content updates, applying the live-service expertise it honed on Black Desert.

What works and what doesn't

  • Pros: A stunning, richly detailed open world and some of the most cinematic boss fights in the genre.
  • Pros: Deep, satisfying combat that rewards experimentation, plus strong post-launch support.
  • Cons: A story that struggles to match the spectacle, and control responsiveness that can feel imprecise.
  • Cons: Some technical rough edges and pacing issues betray the game's overwhelming ambition.

Verdict

Crimson Desert is a gorgeous, thrilling, and occasionally frustrating epic that announces Pearl Abyss as a serious force in single-player action games. Its world and combat reach for greatness and often grasp it, even as a thin story and rough edges keep it from the top tier. With ongoing updates already improving the experience, this is a game that could grow into something even better over time. For anyone craving a lavish open-world adventure with spectacular combat, it is well worth the journey, imperfections and all.
