Emergence Day, from the start
The Coalition’s prequel goes back to Emergence Day itself. Fourteen years before the original game, Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are there as the Locust first erupt from underground.

- Campaign co-op: solo, up to four players online, or two-player split-screen on console.
- Launch: October 6 worldwide on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam, as confirmed by Xbox Wire, after Premium Edition early access began October 1.
Same shooting, different patience
| Critic | Score | Played on | Takeaway |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryan McCaffrey, IGN | 9/10 | Xbox Series X | A heartfelt origin story with memorable set pieces |
| Abbie Stone, PC Gamer | 77/100 | PC (Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 laptop) | Superb shooting, but a long campaign that repeats a single idea |
Ryan McCaffrey’s IGN review finds real emotional weight in the prequel, even though players know Marcus and Dom survive, and credits it with giving new squadmates Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes meaningful time of their own. He enjoys the weapon roster, the new mod and Tactical Gear systems, the boss fights and the dense battle spaces in the city of Kalona. His complaints are specific. AI partners sometimes failed to revive him, and he saw occasional frame-rate hitches even in Performance Mode. In multiplayer, he regrets the lack of private matches but treats Horde Siege as the standout.
Abbie Stone at PC Gamer agrees that the cover shooting has never felt better, thanks to more agile characters and smarter button mapping, and argues that the Hardcore difficulty is where encounters come alive. Her problem is the campaign. She feels the prequel adds little to characters fans already know, and that more than 20 hours of lightly remixed firefights leave too little variety. Intrusive collectible prompts and elite enemies that soak up damage bother her too, though she praises the multiplayer and describes Horde Siege as a clever expansion of the classic mode.
Two scores, one foundation
Our reading is that the 9 and the 77 rest on the same base. Both critics praise how E-Day plays from moment to moment, and both single out Horde Siege. The gap opens over the campaign, so the average sitting between them tells you less than knowing what kind of Gears player you are.
If you come to the series for co-op campaigns and wave survival, both reviews point the same way. If you want the kind of varied solo campaign Stone admired in Gears 5, her reservations deserve more weight. Keep the testing context in mind too: McCaffrey’s frame-rate notes describe the build he played, not necessarily the current one.
The buying call
E-Day looks like a strong pick for players who want a cover shooter with long-term multiplayer, particularly groups drawn to Horde Siege. Solo players who mainly care about story should read Stone’s review before paying full price, especially if earlier Gears campaigns felt repetitive to them. Neither critic doubts the quality of the shooting. The open question is how much campaign you want around it.
