Marvel’s Wolverine Review Roundup: Savage Combat, Split Verdicts

PS5
GAME MODE Staff· Oct 18, 2026 3m read

Insomniac’s brutal, linear Logan story divides critics: one finds the combat thrilling to the end, the other finds it wearing thin by the halfway point.

About this review roundup: GAME MODE has not playtested this game. This is original analysis of the credited reviews and official information below, researched October 18, 2026. The displayed 7.3/10 is the equally weighted average of these two critics’ scores, converted to ten and rounded to one decimal. It is not a GAME MODE playtest score or a comprehensive review aggregate.

Released: September 15, 2026. Platforms: PS5.

Logan rejoins Team X

Insomniac Games, the studio behind Marvel’s Spider-Man, made Marvel’s Wolverine as an original story in collaboration with Marvel Games. The official PlayStation page explains that Logan rejoins the mutant task force Team X three years after walking away, as Bolivar Trask kidnaps mutants. The adventure moves between Canada, Japan and the island nation of Madripoor. It launched on September 15 exclusively on PS5, with PS5 Pro enhancements.

Thrilling to the end, or worn out by the middle?

Game Informer, 8.5/10: momentum to the finish

Matt Miller’s Game Informer review is based on PS5 testing, and he believes the game captures Wolverine’s speed and ferocity better than any film or game before it. He describes the combat as highly satisfying and well balanced, with attacks, dodges and parries feeding a momentum loop that powers Logan’s healing and rage, and he says new abilities arrive steadily. His reservations concern the story: slower character scenes are tightly scripted, and the second half seems more interested in setting up what comes next than in resolving key relationships. He also warns that the linear structure is nothing like the open world of Spider-Man.

IGN, 6/10: enough by the halfway point

Simon Cardy’s IGN review is based on time with a PS5 Pro. He praises Liam McIntyre’s performance as Logan, Krizia Bajos as Jean Grey, and gory, superbly animated finishers. But he finds the fighting simple and forgiving, says the handful of new skills arrives too early to change your approach, and feels many arenas blend together. By the halfway point of the roughly 15-hour campaign, he felt he’d already had enough of the fighting. He also considers the slow walking sections between missions to be padding.

Closer than the scores look

The central disagreement is simple: does the combat stay exciting until the end? Miller says the campaign finishes before the fights grow stale. Cardy says they lose their edge long before the finale.

On the rest, they agree more than an 8.5 and a 6 suggest, including:

  • a strong cast;
  • brutal animation;
  • a story with clear limits.

So the average is a midpoint between two coherent but incompatible experiences. It isn’t evidence that everyone found Wolverine merely decent.

Which review sounds like you?

Our reading is that your appetite for repetition will decide your experience.

  • If you love mastering a fast, aggressive combat loop and returning for challenge stages and New Game+, Game Informer’s account is likely closer to what you’ll feel.
  • If you need regular new mechanics or varied level design to stay engaged, take IGN’s criticism seriously.

The buying call

Wolverine fans who want a focused, bloody, cinematic action game have good reasons to play, and both reviews treat Insomniac’s Logan as a success. If you’re expecting a Spider-Man-style open world, reset your expectations before buying. Still unsure? Cardy’s review is the best test of whether 15 hours of claw combat will hold your attention.
