Chasing a Million: The Subathon Records Rewriting Earnings

The million-sub milestone

The subathon has become streaming's most lucrative format, and the records keep climbing. Kai Cenat became the first Twitch streamer to pass one million active subscriptions, peaking at around 1,064,090 subs on September 28, 2025, during his month-long Mafiathon 3 event. That shattered his own prior record of 728,525 from Mafiathon 2, itself a landmark at the time.

These numbers translate into staggering revenue. At Twitch's standard split, seven-figure subscriber counts mean millions of dollars in a single month, which is why the subathon has gone from a fan-driven novelty to a headline event on the calendar.

Not just the biggest names

The format's reach extends beyond the usual top creators. Before Kai Cenat reclaimed the crown, VTuber Ironmouse had broken the all-time record with a charity subathon that surpassed roughly 320,000 subs, briefly topping him and marking a milestone for both VTubers and charity streaming.

The appeal of the subathon rests on a simple, compelling loop:

  • A timer extends every time viewers subscribe, so the audience directly controls how long the stream runs.
  • Marathon broadcasts create a sense of event and community that short streams cannot match.
  • Charity tie-ins add a feel-good incentive that drives even more subscriptions.

Where it goes next

The looming question is whether Twitch's 2026 changes democratize the format. With Monetization for All unlocking subscriptions from day one and the Affiliate bar lowered, far more creators can now run a subathon of their own. The mechanic that made Kai Cenat a record-setter is no longer reserved for those who spent months clearing eligibility hurdles.

There is a cautionary side too. Month-long broadcasts raise real concerns about burnout, and the pressure to keep a timer alive can push creators to stream in unhealthy stretches. The most successful subathons pair the earnings potential with clear limits and support teams.

Still, as the defining money-maker of modern streaming, the subathon shows no sign of slowing. The next record may not come from the biggest name on the platform, but from a mid-tier creator who finally has the tools to try.
