Valve's hardware push gets real

Valve is making its biggest hardware move since the Steam Deck. The company has confirmed that both the Steam Machine, a console-style living-room PC, and the Steam Frame, a standalone SteamOS VR headset, are shipping in summer 2026, narrowing an earlier vague window. Together they extend Valve's SteamOS ambitions from handhelds to the living room and VR.

The Steam Machine is the headliner for most players, a compact box built to bring the SteamOS experience to a television without the friction of a full desktop.

What Valve has confirmed

The Steam Machine's specifications are official:

  • A semi-custom AMD Zen 4 six-core, twelve-thread CPU and a semi-custom RDNA 3 GPU with 28 compute units.
  • 16GB of DDR5 plus 8GB of GDDR6, with 512GB or 2TB NVMe storage and a microSD slot, running SteamOS 3.
  • Valve claims roughly six times the performance of a Steam Deck, targeting 4K 60 FPS using FSR upscaling.
  • It ships with the new Steam Controller 2 and a wireless puck, plus DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0, and Wi-Fi 6E, in a roughly 156mm cube.

Both devices fold into Steam's Verified program so Deck-optimized games run without configuration.

The pricing question

The catch is cost. Valve has not set an official price, saying only that it aims for the general window of building an equivalent PC from parts, and it has explicitly warned that the 2026 memory-price spike could push the final number higher. Reports of specific figures should be treated as speculation until Valve commits.

That caveat matters, because the memory shortage reshaping the entire hardware market lands squarely on a device stuffed with DDR5 and GDDR6. A machine Valve might have priced aggressively a year ago could arrive more expensive simply because of component costs outside its control.

Still, the strategic significance is hard to overstate. By putting SteamOS on a living-room box and a VR headset, Valve is building a hardware ecosystem around its storefront that reduces reliance on Windows. If the Steam Machine hits its performance targets at a reasonable price, it could become the natural centerpiece for players who want console simplicity with PC flexibility. The summer window means answers, including that all-important price, are close.
