An extraction-shooter phenomenon

ARC Raiders has become one of gaming's clearest recent success stories. Embark Studios' extraction shooter, launched in late October 2025 and published under Nexon at around $40, has surpassed 16 million units sold worldwide, including 4.6 million copies in the first quarter of 2026 alone. Nexon called it the most successful new product release in company history.

More telling than raw sales is how deeply players have committed to it, a sign the game has genuine staying power rather than a hot launch that fades.

Engagement that runs deep

The player numbers are remarkable:

  • More than half the active player base has logged over 100 hours.
  • Players have accumulated 1.5 billion total gameplay hours.
  • The game peaked at roughly 3.2 million daily active players in early January 2026, a post-launch record.
  • Embark has confirmed two new games in early development, though details remain thin.

Those retention figures are the kind extraction shooters live and die by, since the genre depends on players returning for tense, high-stakes runs rather than finishing a campaign and leaving.

A cadence shift

Success has prompted a strategic change in how Embark supports the game. The studio is moving away from monthly updates toward a roughly semi-annual cadence, favoring larger content drops over frequent smaller ones. The next major update, Frozen Trail, is slated for October 2026 and adds the game's largest map yet.

The trade-off is a familiar live-service debate. Frequent updates keep a game feeling alive and give players constant reasons to check in, but they can strain developers and result in thinner content. Bigger, rarer drops let a studio swing for more ambitious additions, at the cost of longer quiet stretches that risk players drifting away. Embark is betting that ARC Raiders' extraordinary retention gives it the runway to make players wait for larger, more meaningful updates.

Given how many players are already hundreds of hours deep, that confidence seems earned. Frozen Trail's new map will be the first big test of whether the semi-annual model keeps the community engaged. For now, ARC Raiders stands as proof that a well-made extraction shooter can command both massive sales and extraordinary loyalty.
