Final Fantasy Resonance is out. Square Enix announced on Thursday, October 22, that the game is available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Xbox on PC, and it calls Resonance the first HD-2D entry in the Final Fantasy series.

A free demo covers the entire first chapter, with some level restrictions, and its save data carries over to the full game.

Rain, Laswell and an airship squadron

Resonance is based on the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, rebuilt as a console-quality RPG. It follows Rain, a knight of the Kingdom of Grandshelt who was given command of an airship squadron at a young age, joined by his childhood friend Laswell.

Series heroes appear as Visions, echoes of Final Fantasy characters who fight alongside the party with unique skills. Square Enix names Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light among them, and Xbox Wire’s list also includes Terra from Final Fantasy VI and Zidane from Final Fantasy IX.

Weak points, extra turns and Ultima Weapon

Battles are turn-based. Exploiting an enemy’s weakness staggers it and breaks its defenses for extra turns, and powerful Resonance attacks play out in cinematic battles.

Steam’s listing also points to side content away from the main story:

  • Gilgamesh, the wandering swordmaster
  • A Colosseum
  • The Chamber of Arms, with foes sealed in legendary weapons
  • A showdown with Ultima Weapon
