Diablo IV’s September Update Brings Back Cain and Opens Sanctuary to Switch 2

Diablo IV has two arrivals on its September 15 calendar: Season of Hell’s Legacy and the Nintendo Switch 2 release of the Age of Hatred Collection. Blizzard’s BlizzCon announcement sets the seasonal rollout for 9:30 a.m. Pacific, or 12:30 p.m. Eastern.

The anniversary season brings Deckard Cain back into the story and sends players against Baal, Mephisto, and Diablo. Its central idea is taking on fragments of the Prime Evils’ power, with consequences attached to those gifts.

Returning characters and familiar loot

The season overview details Rebirth, a feature for moving an Eternal character into a new seasonal run. It resets that character to level one while preserving identity details and tracking time played across successive Rebirths. Before using it, move equipment and inventory items into the Eternal stash; the feature requires the character’s carried and equipped items to be cleared.

Nine Legacy Uniques join the loot pool, including Stone of Jordan and Leoric’s Crown. These are permanent additions available on both Seasonal and Eternal realms. Blizzard also lists a Twitch reward window from September 15 at 11 a.m. Pacific through September 29 at 10:59 a.m. Pacific: two hours watching Diablo IV streams earns the Deforestation Two-Handed Axe cosmetic.

What the Switch 2 package contains

Age of Hatred Collection bundles Diablo IV with Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred. The Nintendo eShop listing confirms cross-play and cross-progression, an internet connection and Battle.net account requirement, and a Nintendo Switch Online requirement for cross-play.

This is a new platform edition of Diablo IV. The separate Diablo V announcement points to spring 2029, while the Amazon class pack for Diablo IV is planned for the first half of 2027. Neither belongs to today’s launch.
