The PS5 SSD Upgrade Checklist That Matters Before Checkout

Check the interface, heatsink dimensions, and usable capacity before choosing a drive for your PlayStation 5.
Expanding a PS5 is about compatibility as much as capacity. Sony specifies a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe drive, recommends sequential reads of at least 5,500MB/s, and requires effective heat dissipation. An M.2 SATA drive is not an alternative simply because its shape looks familiar. (PlayStation M.2 SSD installation guide)
Check the finished dimensions
The measurements that count include the cooling structure. Sony lists a maximum width of 25mm and total thickness of 11.25mm, with separate clearance above and below the board. Compare the exact model and heatsink combination against the support guide; a product family name alone is not enough.
Capacity should follow your habits. Estimate the space used by the games you regularly return to, then leave room for another large installation and updates. Buying the largest drive available makes little sense if you normally rotate between a handful of titles, while constant deleting and downloading is a good reason to move up.
Prepare before opening the console
Check your PS5 model and follow its specific cover-removal instructions. Update the system, fully power it down, unplug it, and let it cool before installation. Keep the tiny screw and spacer somewhere they cannot disappear.
Formatting a drive for the console erases its existing contents, so move anything important elsewhere first. This is a storage upgrade, not a guaranteed frame-rate boost: Sony explicitly notes that performance can still differ from the internal SSD. Pick reliable compatibility first, then choose the capacity that makes your library easier to live with.
