PS6 Leaks Point to 2027 as the Memory Crisis Clouds Timing

Leaked specs paint the PS6 as a major leap over the PS5, but the same memory shortage squeezing the market could push Sony's next console toward 2028.

A powerful console, if the timing holds
The PlayStation 6 rumor mill is running hot, and the picture it paints is ambitious. Everything below is leak-sourced; Sony has made no official hardware announcement, so none of these specs should be taken as fact. The most-cited target has been 2027, but a February 2026 Bloomberg report indicated Sony is weighing a push to 2028 or even 2029 because of the memory shortage.
What the leaks describe
Reported specifications suggest a substantial generational jump:
- An AMD APU pairing a Zen 6 CPU with an RDNA 5 GPU on TSMC's 2nm process.
- Roughly three times the PS5's rasterization performance and a claimed six-to-twelve-times improvement in ray tracing.
- GDDR7 memory at around 640 GB/s, roughly 43 percent over the PS5, on a 160-bit bus.
- A likely 1TB SSD and the possibility of a disc-drive-free design.
Alongside the console, leaks describe a dedicated PlayStation handheld, reportedly codenamed Project Canis. It is said to use a custom 3nm APU with a mix of Zen 6 cores and 16 RDNA 5 compute units, 24 to 36GB of LPDDR5X, and roughly half the PS5's raster power but stronger ray tracing.
The counterpoint
Not everyone believes the memory crisis will derail next-gen plans. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has publicly said next-generation console plans, including the PS6 and the next Xbox, are unlikely to be affected by the memory and storage crunch. That optimism sits in direct tension with the Bloomberg reporting, and the truth may land somewhere in between.
For players, the practical stance is patience and skepticism. The specs sound thrilling, but leaked TFLOP numbers and process nodes have a habit of shifting before silicon ships, and a console launched into a memory shortage risks either higher pricing or a later date. Until Sony speaks on the record, the PS6 remains an exciting sketch rather than a product, and 2027 versus 2028 is very much an open question.
