Watch the Buy Phase: A Better Way Into VALORANT Esports

Weapons, abilities, and shared plans can tell you what a team wants before the first duel begins.

VALORANT combines team-based attack and defense with agents, weapons, and abilities. Riot’s beginner guide introduces those building blocks, but a broadcast can still feel overwhelming when ten players prepare at once. Start by looking at what each side brings into the round. Read the team, not one expensive weapon
Compare equipment across the entire lineup. A team with mismatched purchases may need to arrange fights differently from a fully equipped opponent. Watch who stays close enough to recover a fallen teammate’s weapon and who uses utility to create a favorable first engagement.
You do not need to memorize prices immediately. Recognizing a cautious round, a coordinated investment, or a desperate attempt to recover momentum already makes the action more readable.
Ask one question after each round
What created the first useful advantage? It might be an opening duel, information, a successful fake, or opponents spending too much time clearing empty space. Then look at how the surviving team protects that advantage. This approach makes a slow round worth watching and gives highlight plays context. As you learn the agents, add one ability at a time to the picture instead of trying to decode every visual effect in a single match.
