A royal robbery in 1792, a raid on the Louvre in 2025 and a side story in Assassin’s Creed Unity. A new episode of Echoes of History, the official Assassin’s Creed podcast from Ubisoft and History Hit, ties all three together.

“What Happened To The French Crown Jewels?” came out on October 2 and runs just over 52 minutes. An episode on the Great Wall of China followed on October 16, and both are available now on the show’s Acast page.

Two thefts, one Paris Story

In September 1792, the crown jewels of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette were stolen. On October 19, 2025, thieves posing as construction workers took eight pieces from the Louvre’s Gallery of Apollo.

Assassin’s Creed Unity picks up the aftermath of that earlier robbery in its “French Crown Jewels” Paris Story, where players recover the last of the lost jewels. If you play Unity, listen first, then revisit the Paris Story with the real history in mind.

Two episodes, two guests

Dr David Gilks on the crown jewels

Host Matt Lewis is joined by Dr David Gilks of the University of East Anglia to ask what happened to the royal family’s other treasures after the monarchy was abolished during the French Revolution. Ubisoft collected fan questions for the episode through a Reddit thread in August.

Dr Jeremiah Jenne on the Great Wall

The October 16 episode, “Why Did The Great Wall Of China Fail To Keep Out The Mongols?”, brings in Dr Jeremiah Jenne, co-host of the history podcast Barbarians at the Gate. It covers:

  • how long the wall is;
  • when it was built;
  • whether it can really be seen from space;
  • how accurately Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China shows the wall as a building site under attack.
